C4 DoIP Device Review: Why Mercedes Technicians Prefer It Over C5 and C6

Welcome back to our car diagnostic software review! Today, we’ll take an in-depth look at the C4 DoIP device and explore why Mercedes technicians consistently choose it over the C5 and C6 models.

Why Do Technicians Prefer the C4 DoIP Device?
One of the standout features of the C4 DoIP device is its rugged design. It is highly resistant to shocks and water, making it a reliable tool in various working conditions. Additionally, it comes fully equipped with buttons and multiple connection ports, ensuring seamless usability.
Here are the key reasons why technicians favor the C4 DoIP over other devices:
* Complete Cable Set: Unlike the C6, which only includes a 16-pin cable, the C4 comes with all the necessary cables for connecting to any Mercedes vehicle.
* Cost-Effectiveness: The C4 is significantly more affordable than the C6.
* Software Compatibility: The C4 supports all Mercedes diagnostic software, including HHT WIN, whereas the C6 is not compatible with HHT WIN.
* Operating Speed: The C6 has a slight edge in speed, but the C4’s versatility with older and newer vehicle models makes it the better overall choice.

C4 DoIP vs. C5: A Comparison

When comparing the C4 DoIP to the C5, several factors come into play:
* Full Connectivity: Both devices support all Mercedes models with their cable connections.
* Price Difference: The C5 is about $200 more expensive than the C4 DoIP, depending on the distributor.
* Software Limitations: The C5 only works with older versions of Xentry, whereas the C4 DoIP is fully compatible with the latest version.
* Stability & Reliability: In our testing, the C5 was not as stable as the C4 DoIP.
* DoIP Protocol: The C4 supports the DoIP protocol, making it ideal for intensive diagnostics.
With its affordability, full feature set, and superior reliability, the C4 DoIP stands out as the best choice for Mercedes technicians.

Testing a New C4 vs. a 1-Year-Old C4: Any Performance Difference?
To test the durability of the C4 DoIP, we compared a brand-new unit with one that has been in use for a year.
Visual & Physical Differences
The older C4 showed some exterior changes, especially around the screen positioning. However, the real test was in its performance.
Performance Test: Error Reading with Xentry Software
We measured the temperature generated by each device during fault reading using an electronic temperature meter. To ensure accuracy, we reset the device’s temperature using a cup of cold water before each test.

Test Results:
New C4 DoIP Device
oError reading time: 1 minute 52 seconds
oTemperature generated: 34.1°C
1-Year-Old C4 DoIP Device
oError reading time: 1 minute 47 seconds (even faster than the new device)
oTemperature generated: 35.1°C

Final Verdict
Despite being in use for a year, the older C4 DoIP device performed just as well—if not slightly better—than the new one. The small temperature difference does not impact functionality, proving that the C4 DoIP is a durable and reliable tool for long-term use.
For Mercedes technicians looking for the best balance of price, functionality, and longevity, the C4 DoIP remains the top choice.
